Amy Laura Guerena, age 90, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on October 27, 2020. She was born on April 5, 1930, in Ashland, Montana, to Valdo and Laura Petter. She grew up as part of a missionary family on a ranch right next to the Cheyenne Native American reservation with her two brothers and several adopted Cheyenne children who became a part of her family. She received a degree in Christian Education from Biola in Los Angeles, California. While there, she met her husband, Phillip Guerena, who was also a student at Biola. Together, they had three children and moved to Mexico City as missionaries where they lived and served for 19 years. After returning from Mexico City they served and ministered in churches in Los Angeles, California and Columbus, Ohio, for the next 36 years.  After a stroke in 2018 she spent her last two years at Darby Glen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she was loved and cared for by their staff and in her final days by the staff of Bella Care Hospice until she went to be with the Lord.   During this time, Amy also had two loving and supporting church families who were a source of constant love,  encouragement, comfort and prayer not only to her but to her family as well:  Northwest Chapel and Iglesia Amor Cristiano.

Amy is survived by her beloved husband, Phillip Guerena, brother Valdo (Julane) Petter, children Laurie Alvarez, Phillip Valdo Guerena, Martin (Kristy) Guerena; grandchildren Cynthia (Raul) Martinez, Alex (Dani) Alvarez, Eric Alvarez and Daniel (Rachel) Guerena; great-grandchildren David, Isabel and Sarah Martinez, Elena and Natalia Alvarez, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their children. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Daniel and sisters Darlena and Amelia.

Amy had two qualities that she was known for by all of those who knew and loved her. She loved God and she loved people. Her love for God came through in a relationship with God that was personal as she spent much time reading His word and praying.  Amy had complete confidence and even prayed to God that He would take her home to heaven. Not because she lived a good life, but because she put her faith in Jesus as the one who paid for her sins on the cross. Her love for people started with her family as she listened, encouraged, prayed for them and enjoyed spending time with them.  She also found it easy to share the love of Jesus with everyone she met no matter where she happened to be. All those who met and knew Amy felt loved, accepted, valued and affirmed. She inspired us all to be more like Jesus.

Amy’s husband Phillip has written an article about her entitled “Dr. Petter’s granddaughter.”  If you want to read this and other articles by him you can find these at https://greaterbenefitsfoundation.com/
